Keep your muffler in great shape and cut down on auto repair. These words are blasted across television screens and in magazines every day. But what is the big deal about a muffler? Is it really such an important part of your vehicle?
Your Muffler
On every gas or diesel powered car or truck exhaust gases are produced by internal combustion. The exhaust gasses are routed through a system of sealed exhaust pipes. In turn, the exhaust pipes lead to the muffler – the last stop before the gases enter the atmosphere.
Mufflers are intended to muffle the noise of the loud exhaust gases as they exit the vehicle. During combustion, high energy causes the exhaust gases to emit a range of sound that are loud and unpleasant. Mufflers help to quite these loud combustion noises. Mufflers also have the capability of toning the exhaust sounds or covering up the more unpleasing of the sounds.
There are three common mufflers used in vehicles today. The three most used mufflers are the absorption muffler, the diffusion muffler, and the Helmholtz chamber.
The absorption muffler is popular with performance muffler manufacturers. It has the least resistance capabilities. This muffler includes a straight tube perforated and surrounded by sound proofing materials. With this type of muffler the gasses pass through the pipes with little resistance while the sound is absorbed by materials surrounding the tube.
The diffusion muffler used in auto maintence divides the flow of gas into two different streams. This muffler uses baffles – plates and tubes – to keep noise down. The baffles lengthen the time it takes for the gas to get through the exhaust system. This lowers the sound of the exhaust.
The Helmholtz chamber is also known as the cancellation chamber. The type of muffler has its own sounds due to specific volumes and lengths. With this type of muffler sound will enter at one end of the muffler and are cancelled out as they pass through the muffler. Auto repair experts say this type of muffler rarely is installed by itself. Instead, it works in combination with an absorption or diffusion muffler.
Performance Mufflers
In addition to standard mufflers that keep your car working and keep you from having a towing bill there are performance mufflers. These mufflers maximize your cars power and give car lovers a great sound.
Three chamber mufflers are one of the quietest types of performance mufflers. You will find these on trucks and larger vehicles that do not want too much noise.
Hushpower mufflers are used in auto maintence for cars and trucks that have space limitations. You still get high performance but without the need for a large space. Two chamber mufflers make your inside ride quite but ramp up the muffler sounds outside the vehicle. These are typical muscle car and sports car favorites.
There are a variety of specialized mufflers you can use for auto maintenance. The trick? Make sure that whatever muffler you choose you keep up a regular maintence schedule to keep your vehicle in great shape.
